Teaching number spellings with story

My son is in early stage of learning number spellings. Just like with many kids, it is a difficult task. So, I have done a small experiment through interactive story telling to bring interest in learning number spellings.

Dad: “There is one boy who is searching for a treasure. The treasure is inside a cave. But the cave doors are closed.”

Son: “Dad, How do cave doors will open?”

“There is an alphabet map at the entrance of the cave. The boy shall jump on number spelling of “number 2”. Once he jumps on all letters in spelling, doors will open. Can you help the boy open cave doors?”

“Yes, I know it. It is spelled T W O”

“You did it, the cave doors opened. The boy now entered the cave. But do you know what is inside the cave?”

“What is it?”

“There is a dragon waiting to eat the boy.”

“How do we save him?”

“There is a cage hanging over the dragon. The cage will lock dragon if the boy bounces on spelling of “number 5”.”

“That’s not hard. I know it P H I VE.”

“No, wrong. Think again.”

“Hmm, is it F I V E”

“You are right, the dragon trapped in a cage. The boy moves on. He found a terrible lava river. He must cross it to reach treasure.”

“You mean, Lava river like the one that killed dinosaurs?”

“Yes.”

“Oh, that’s bad. How do we save him?”

“You just tell the spelling of number “8”, and 8 rocks will fall in the lava river and close it.”

“Ok, this is going to be harder. It is spelled I G H T

“You are so close, think again. How do you pronounce 8?”

“Is it E I G H T?”

“Yes, you did it. The rocks have closed the lava river. Now the boy moves on. But wait, there is a dangerous flock waiting for him.”

“What is it? What is it?”

“There are many Hyenas waiting for prey.”

“But, Lion can scare them away.”

“Ok, you can call Lion by telling me the spelling of “11””.

“It is L E V N

“Think hard, it starts with E”

“I got it, E L E V N

“No, think again.”

“Hmm. E L E V E N??”

“You are right. The might Lion has come, and it roared the Hyenas away. Do you know the name of this Lion?”

“I know, Muffassaaaa!”

“The boy now moves on to see a mega T. rex. How do you fight T. rex?”

“The boy can’t fight T. rex, only a Triceratops can fight it. Which spelling should we say to bring Triceratops?”

“Tell spelling of “13”.”

“Ok, Dad, What is the spelling of 3?”

“It doesn’t work that way for 13 and 15. Think again.”

“zzzzz TEEN”

“Come on, what is zzzzzz?”

“A clue please?”

“You know how it starts. Try”

“I think, T H zzzz TEEN”

“Now, how do you get sound of thirteen?”

“Ah, I need an R and T. It is T H R T TEEN

“You are missing something. You need a vowel.”

“Like T H I R T E E N

“Yay, You did it. A triceratops emerged in the cave and fought with T. Rex. Now the dinosaurs have gone. Let us move ahead.”

“Did dinosaurs went to dinosaur land?”

“Yes. Now the boy moved ahead to see the Treasure chest waiting for him on a rock.”

“Yay, we did it.”

“Not yet, there is a very big snake snapped around the treasure chest.”

“You mean, like a Super Mario snake?”

“You are right, the snake will go away only if you spell number “20”.”

“It is easy, T W E N T Y

“You did it, the boy got his treasure.”

“What is inside that treasure box?”

“Hmm, what do you think?”

“Like ice cream? Or Chocolates?”

“You are quite right.”

“Can we eat a scoop of ice cream now?”
